New logo and identity for Nextdoor

If you woke up this morning and thought you had a new app on your phone, you’re not alone.

Nextdoor just rolled out a brand new look for their Android and iOS apps, which includes both a new color scheme and logo, and a new app icon!

While Nextdoor hasn’t announced anything yet, it’s clear that they have been working on this update for some time. The new look, which includes a fresh new wordmark logo, font selection, and colors, can be seen throughout the app.

As so many tech companies are doing now, Nextdoor has scrapped their bulky sans-serif font in favor of a new typeface with a hint of “script” to it.

While it’s not a completely new direction for the branding, it’s definitely a notable shift. The slanted headings found throughout the app, combined with the bright lime green and rounded wordmark logo seems to speaks to a younger audience.

  1. I like it, and I think it’s interesting that it closely resembles the Hebrew word chai, which means life. That would be appropriate, since NextDoor is intended to bring communities together in life. Is it a coincidence? I don’t know, but like I said I like it.

    • Thanks for your comment, Jennifer!

I don’t know if that’s what they were intending with the design or not, but it’s definitely an interesting observation.

  2. It’s an ugly green and an ugly elephant shaped “n” and it is the top topic on our local Nextdoor… bottomline, it’s aweful.

    • Yep! I’ve heard it compared to both an elephant and a dinosaur before, and I can definitely see that.

I’m sure as we see it around more and more that impression will fade.

    • I agree with Dan and many others – it does not represent “Home”.

As Nancy stated, “If it isn’t broke, why fix it?” !!!! Thank you

      • Thanks for your comment, Rose!

I agree, I’m not a huge fan of the new icon. I do, however, like the new green color they are using. It feels a little more fun and vibrant — the way Nextdoor should be!

  3. As a designer, I like it…much cleaner and more contemporary. The old house logo is pretty trite and unimaginative. I like the shade of green too.

I completely agree. While I personally liked how straight-forward the home icon was, the updated green color is spot on! It adds life to the logo and icon that just wasn’t there before.

  4. Ugh. The lime green is ok, but the elephant-n leaves me cold. As a typographer, IMO the ‘n’ is fine if the intent was to present the back end of an elephant — and the movement of the ‘trunk’ when the app opens solidifies this impression. As a letter ‘n’ this a fail. I imagine someone formed this stylized ‘n’ and another person said, ‘oh, it looks like an elephant!’ They thought it was cute and no one advised that an elephant has nothing to do with the NextDoor brand. Et voilà!

Huge disappointment…comes across as poor and amateurish marketing and design.

  5. As an instant identifier, the green elephant is a flop. The ‘neighborhood identifier’ should not have the appearance of a seasick elephant, waving for help.
